Consuelo is a now-famous restaurant in the city of Cuenca, the birthplace of some of the most famous dishes in Ecuador. It only made sense that the kitsch-y decor and graphics were fed by street food imagery from all over the country, from painted signs in kiosks and markets to vintage consumables packaging.
Consuelo offers traditional cuisine with a twist, the menu features clever preparations with local ingredients as well as centuries' old recipes. The palette is inspired by the primary colors in the Ecuadorian flag, and of course, the yellow and red colors from Cuenca city flag.
The kitschy interior design of the restaurant features religious trinkets of all sorts collected over the years, salvaged toys and treasures found in second hand troves. Classical paintings hang beautifully over adobe walls. Consuelo is located inside of one of the oldest colonial mansions in Cuenca, recently restored, this magnificently eclectic eatery is a must-go in the city.
